Commission plan templates
Thirteen plan structures, each with a worked example you can check by hand, and the plan definition the product would actually create. Every one of them compiles, that is asserted by the test suite, not by us saying so.
Flat rate
One rate on everything. The simplest plan that pays anyone.
A rep closing $50,000 earns $2,500 at 5%.
Tiered AE with renewals
Graduated tiers on quota attainment for new business, plus a flat rate on renewals.
A rep at 114% of a $5,000 monthly quota earns $484: 8% up to quota, 12% on the rest.
Ramped new hire
Tiered commission with a recoverable draw for the first six months.
A new rep earning $2,000 against a $4,000 draw is topped up to $4,000; the $2,000 shortfall is recovered from later months.
Tiered on total bookings
Rates step up as cumulative bookings grow, no quota required.
A rep booking $120,000 earns 6% on the first $50,000, 8% on the next $50,000, and 10% on the rest.
AE with accelerators
The most common SaaS structure: a base rate to quota, then accelerating rates above it.
A rep at 160% of a $100,000 quota earns $10,000 to quota, $7,500 from 100–150%, and $2,000 above: $19,500.
Quarterly cliff
Crossing a threshold re-rates the entire quarter, not just the excess.
A rep at 101% of a $300,000 quota earns 12% on all $303,000, $36,360. At 99% they earn 8%: $23,760.
Gross margin
Pays on margin rather than revenue, so discounting costs the rep.
A $100,000 deal with $60,000 of cost pays 20% of the $40,000 margin: $8,000.
Target variable pay
Pays a share of target variable compensation scaled by attainment, capped at 2×.
A rep with $25,000 target variable at 120% attainment earns $30,000.
SDR: meetings and sourced revenue
A fixed amount per qualified meeting, plus a slice of anything sourced that closes.
20 meetings at $100 each is $2,000, plus 2% of $200,000 sourced and won.
CSM: retention and expansion
Renewals and expansion at different rates, with a clawback if the account churns quickly.
A $200,000 renewal pays $6,000, reversed if the customer churns within 120 days.
Rate by product
Different rates per product line, looked up from a table.
$50,000 of platform pays 12%; $50,000 of services pays 5%.
Capped plan
An annual ceiling on total commission, clipped when it binds.
Once a rep reaches $250,000 for the fiscal year, further periods pay nothing.
MBO bonus
A bonus pool scaled by a manually scored objective, for non-revenue goals.
A rep scoring 0.8 against a $10,000 objective pool earns $8,000.
Not seeing yours?
These are starting points rather than a menu, plans compose from measures, crediting rules, components, rates, multipliers, draws, clawbacks and caps, so most real plans are a combination rather than something new. The FAQ is honest about the three archetypes that do not compile today.
